You've built a great website. But if nobody can find it on Google, it's not doing you any good.

In our 18+ years working with South African businesses, we've seen the same SEO mistakes over and over. Here are the five most costly ones — and how to fix them.

Mistake #1: Ignoring Local Keywords

This is the biggest one. Businesses chase generic keywords like "web design" when they should be targeting "web design in Centurion" or "web design Pretoria".

Why? Because someone searching for "web design Centurion" is much more likely to hire you than someone searching for just "web design" from across the country.

The Fix: Include your city, suburb, and province in your page titles, meta descriptions, and content. Use Google My Business to claim your local listing. Build local citations (mention your business on local directories).

Mistake #2: Poor Site Structure and Navigation

Google's crawlers need to understand your site structure. If your navigation is confusing, your pages are buried deep, or your URLs are messy, Google struggles to index you properly.

We've seen sites with great content that rank poorly simply because the structure is a mess.

The Fix: Use a clear hierarchy (Home → Services → Individual Service Pages). Keep important pages within 2-3 clicks of the homepage. Use descriptive URLs (e.g., `/services/wordpress-development` instead of `/page123`).

Mistake #3: Slow Page Load Speed

Google ranks faster sites higher. Period. If your site takes 5+ seconds to load, you're losing rankings and visitors.

In South Africa, where internet speeds vary, this is especially critical. A slow site on a 4G connection is a deal-breaker.

The Fix: Optimize images (compress without losing quality). Minimize CSS and JavaScript. Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN). Enable browser caching. Consider upgrading your hosting.

Mistake #4: No Mobile Optimization

Google now ranks the mobile version of your site first. If your site doesn't work well on phones, your rankings will suffer.

This ties back to mobile-first design — a topic we covered in detail in our previous blog post.

The Fix: Test your site on real mobile devices. Use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test tool. Ensure buttons and links are tap-friendly. Make sure text is readable without zooming.

Mistake #5: Ignoring Technical SEO Basics

Many businesses focus on content but ignore the technical foundations that help Google understand and rank their site.

  • Missing Meta Tags: Every page needs a unique title tag and meta description
  • No Schema Markup: Structured data helps Google understand your content (business info, reviews, products, etc.)
  • Broken Links: 404 errors hurt your SEO and user experience
  • No XML Sitemap: This tells Google all the pages on your site
  • Robots.txt Issues: Misconfigured robots.txt can block Google from crawling your site

The Fix: Use tools like Google Search Console to monitor crawl errors. Add schema markup using structured data. Create and submit an XML sitemap. Audit for broken links regularly.

The Bigger Picture

SEO isn't a one-time project — it's ongoing. Google's algorithm changes constantly. New competitors appear. Your content gets older.

The businesses that win at SEO are the ones that treat it as a continuous process: monitoring performance, updating content, fixing technical issues, and staying ahead of algorithm changes.

"SEO is not about gaming Google. It's about building a website that's easy for Google to understand and valuable for your customers to use."
